Very different from their cousins the Gray Squirrel, the California Ground Squirrel stays primarily in meadows instead of forested areas and digs networks of burrows underground. Considered a pest by most farmers and homeowners, the Ground Squirrel is ecological important in aerating the soil, creating burrows for other animals to live in, and providing sustenance to the dozens of animals that prey upon them.
