Brassy, the Education Raccoon

Brassy came to Project Wildlife in July of 1989 and was two years old at that time. He had been an illegal pet, confiscated by Fish & Game.

Brassy is non-releasable as he has detached retinas and does not climb or pick up his food to eat it. He does walk and run just fine. Brassy was thirteen years old in July of this year. He has been in our care all this time, and until the summer of 1997, served as a Project Wildlife education animal and went on many programs all over San Diego County.

When we retired as active volunteers, we asked to have Brassy retired in our care. This was agreeable with the authorities.

Brassy lives a quiet life and visits Dr. Rose Brown once a year for physical exams and booster shots.

How long do raccoons live? The only book that has given an approximate life span says "as long as a dog." We hope he lives at least several more years.
