Ode to a New Day

After long months, in confinement and care,
They are released freely in the mountain air,
Two Steller’s Jays, in a new and strange place,
With our hopes, mixed amid our fears,
As the darkness and chill of nighttime nears,
That they will survive and live
To raise families of their own,
In the forest that rightfully is their home.

A flutter of wings, in the morning light
Is a wonderful and joyous sight,
For they have made it, through the night!
Appearing to be happy in this new day,
And quite assuredly on their way.

Why all the work and expense
For just a couple of birds?
Saving two birds, we must agree,
Provides the start of a family.
When a bird is building a nest,
She is doing something more,
By preparing a way for all the rest
That may hatch and follow, by the score.

(Ed. Note: Our last newsletter featured a story by Nancy Anderson on the release of two Steller’s Jays which inspired John to write the above poem which he intends to include in his next book.)
