Baby Season
by Debbie Beam
Project Wildlife Care Facility Manager

Please tell me that I'm not obsessing! I know spring is almost here, despite what the groundhog might say, especially in San Diego. With that in mind, I find myself watching all species of birds to see if they are carrying bits of grass, leaves, twigs - well, basically anything to build a nest - and where they might be headed.

Could this be the beginning of the season for me, time to turn on a few incubators just in case? Do I start stacking the strawberry baskets lined with Kleenex to hold baby birds? Do I get small kennels and clear containers ready for the baby mammals? Am I becoming neurotic? So many things running through my head. New changes in policies, new volunteers, new...well, you name it. Every year is different. The basics always remain the same. But the challenges! That's what I love. Conquer those challenges with a positive outcome. I think if I look real hard I do see - BABY SEASON!!! - right around the corner, but never the less.

It will hit us before we know. This is the time of year (April - September) when thousands of baby birds and mammals come through our facility doors. Not to mention the hundreds of adult animals needing our help in some way. Whether it is injured, sick or orphaned, we at the Care Facility are there to render help in whatever capacity.

Let me just add that without volunteers, none of this work at Project Wildlife would be possible. So, to all of you who give of your time to help our wildlife, I thank you ever so much!!! The animals, and I, love you!
