News: Winter 2002-2003
In Memory of John Faulkner

It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of a long time friend and supporter of Project Wildlife's, Dr. John Faulkner.

To most Project Wildlife volunteers John was simply Meryl Faulkner's husband. A man of few words and a dry wit, he nurtured the reputation of a cynical curmudgeon. He often presented a facade of a man who had little use for wildlife and tolerated his wife's obsessions with thinly veiled frustration. In reality he was her greatest supporter and took great interest and pride in not only her works, but in the progress of this whole organization.

When I first came to Project Wildlife more than 20 years ago, Meryl was already the patient teacher, a vast source of rehabilitation knowledge, to whom I turned often when things went wrong. But as I made my way onto the Board of Director's and later as President it was just as often John to whom I turned for council. John was never shy with either advice or praise and I will miss both.

John may have kept a low profile in our small community but he had friends and colleagues throughout the world through his association with Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He had a heavy schedule and traveled frequently, but he was always available to Project Wildlife. For the ten years that we sponsored the 10 K run John was always one of the first to volunteer, and each year he would complain bitterly to cover his dedication.

Not one for public displays of affection, I can feel John telling me to "get on with it," so I will end this here lest I risk the wrath of the Welshman.

John Faulkner, Meryl's husband, will be missed by all who knew him and more so by those who never knew how much he gave or how much he cared.
