2002 Successful for Mobile Care Unit!
More Rescues Expected in 2003
Someone once said, "If you build it, they will come."
The Mobile Care Unit (MCU), PW's RV, converted to
handle wildlife, is proving this statement. Our
analysis of PW's records shows that driving distance
influences a person's decision of whether to bring in
an animal needing help. We know that if PW could
provide strategically located care centers throughout
the county, thereby reducing the public's driving
distance, many more animals would be saved from
suffering and death. PW, then, would be able to care
for them and return them to their native habitats.
PW's MCU is designed to begin to fill that need.
Through the efforts of County Supervisor Pam Slater
and Mikel Haas, Director of County Animal Control,
Project Wildlife was able to park the MCU at the
County's North County Animal Control (NCAC), near
Palomar Airport, Carlsbad, during 2002's "baby
season." As a result, the public brought nearly 500
animals to the MCU. The animals were stabilized and
taken to the Care Center on Custer Street. This is 500
of the county's wild creatures that had a second
chance because a PW facility was near by. The
personnel of San Diego County Animal Control and
NCAC have been extremely helpful and supportive of
our efforts. The permit is in place for the Mobile Unit
to return to NCAC in 2003, where we plan to operate
six days per week. We expect a considerable increase
the number of animals brought to the MCU for 2003.
We sincerely thank the County for their assistance.
